Chapter Twenty-Four

Toran

Now I had the unenviable task of letting my davatir know that I needed my squad back.

“And what could you possibly need them for?” ih asked, looking at me over ihs mug of breakfast tea.

“I’m sure it’s for a good reason,” my mata said.

“It is. Please, I don’t want to go into it too much, but it involves Captain Sarai’s scion and a friend of mine. It looks as if someone is trying to bring trouble and they have some questionable business practices that we do not wish to them to bring to the Empire,” I said.

“I see. And you want your squad to help do what, exactly? Are they smugglers or something?”

“They find our species exotic,” I said flatly.

Davatir sat his mug down. “Slavers?” he hissed.

“Opportunists seeking what they believe to be easy credits. It is my friend’s and my belief that a plan is afoot to procure a Jorahnian and that they have set their sights on Lohrai Sarai.”

“How did they even become aware of ihr?” my mata wondered.

“That is part of what we wish to find out. We also hope to lure them into a trap and take down whatever network they’ve established,” I said, hoping ih wouldn’t detect my small fib. “I’d rather not say more in case some of the people we are investigating turn out to be innocent bystanders.” I hoped that would stop Davatir from asking too many questions. I had yet to work out how to extricate Leon from this mess unscathed.

Davatir sighed. “Very well. Beings who peddle flesh often also deal in weapons, and we don’t want them selling to the enemy. I do expect a full accounting before this is all over and if it goes wrong, you will take full responsibility.”

I understood without ihm having to elaborate that this meant public disgrace, possibly even being stripped of my royal title and exiled. “Yes, Reijor.”

“Have some toast, darling,” Mata said, offering me the plate. I wasn’t very hungry, but couldn’t refuse ihr, not after interrupting their breakfast to have a private word.

“Thanks, Mata,” I said, snagging a piece. “I hate to be rude, but I need to start moving my pieces into play as soon as possible.”

Davatir nodded his approval, chewing and swallowing. “You’ve of course kept in contact with your squadmates,” ih said.

“Yes, so I know where they all are,” I replied.

“Mmm. Well, on your way out, have Plothir sent for. I’ll have ihm send an official comm to their current commands and have them on the first transport back. Where do you want them to meet you? I assume you’re wanting this op kept under wraps.”

“If we could make it look as if they are on leave before being reassigned to palace duty again, that would be great. As for where to meet me, I’ll comm them directly with that as soon as I leave here.” My tail twitched in anticipation of the hunt we were about to embark on. Our prey would have no clue they were being stalked.
